R. LILLIAN STUDIO

Artist Statement

My recent work has been about the rich colors and textures of canyons and the elements (earth, fire, wind and water) that shape them.

I begin these pieces by floating colored ink and watercolor on the painting surface. I often lay other materials into this wet application to create textures. I enjoy the process of building color and texture in loose layers that feel less intentional and create the movement I’m looking for. I rarely mix ink or paint before it is applied to the painting surface, as I enjoy the interesting and unexpected results of their commingling on the painting surface.

I am currently working on Tygerag and Yupo because I enjoy the unpredictability of the first applications of color on these surfaces. They allow the ink and paint to remain fluid, giving me an extended opportunity to work. I then follow the painting, allowing it to direct me.  This less representational treatment feels more exciting and alive for me.

For me, it is more engaging to create mood and innuendo than to fully chronicle a piece. I work to capture the vital elements of the southwest landscapes that captivate me; but I choose to leave it to the viewer to interact with the painting and complete the scenario. I do not want you to feel directed as much as transported.

I wish to express my gratitude to Pam Chipman and Wendy Mimiaga who generously donated photography for the exclusive use of the R. Lillian Studio website.
